Free Pattern: Lucky Clover Appliques

IMG_2700Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Last month I shared my pattern for heart appliques. This month I am sharing a pattern for 3 and 4 leafed clovers. This pattern is great for scraps of yarn. Keep reading for the pattern. You can use these clovers to personalize clothing and accessories, or make them in to pins and magnets.

A Quartet of Mermaids

IMG_1867Recently I blogged about a calm colour palette: made up of a blue, pink, purple, and brown yarn. After a busy holiday season, I needed some time to wind down. This week I finished four mermaids inspired by these colours. Keep reading below for a neat characteristic of their hair.

Free Pattern: Heart Appliques

IMG_1567Noah loves practicing his colours, numbers,  and shapes. For Valentine’s Day I decided to use some scrap yarn to make these quick hearts. But I didn’t wait for February 14 to let him play. First there was counting, then hiding, finally throwing. I might also string them into a garland, bracelet, or necklace. Maybe save them to add to mittens or a hat.

Enjoy the pattern!

New Year, New Calm Palette

IMG_0722Happy New Year everyone! Now that the cold weather has a firm grip on Ottawa and Noah somewhat consistently naps in the afternoon, I am ready to hook. I have some pattern ideas on the back burners, but this week I have been inspired by colour. The holidays were hectic and 2013 was a hard year globally speaking. With the new year, I wanted to feel calm. Temperatures are well below freezing and looking outside, I am surrounded by Winter calm. Keep reading below for the colours.

Three New Baby Blankets

First bit of important news. Between now and December 15th you can save 20% off of everything in my Etsy shop. This includes all toys, all rattles, all hats, and all blankets! Be sure to use coupon code: WINTER20.

I’ve been crocheting more than toys lately. With the cooler weather, my toddler has found his love of blankets (here is a post about the one I made for him while I was pregnant) and now you can find pink/purple, yellow, and burgundy baby blankets in my Etsy shop. I love the texture and warm that a yarn blanket provides. Each blanket is made in acrylic yarn that is both soft and practical (stain resistant and can be cleaned in the washing machine and dryer). They are sure to last many years, and hopefully be passed down to a second generation.

Recent Projects–Halloween, Bunny, Mer-folk, Blanket

This year for Halloween, I was considering a few different ideas for a toddler costume: Yoda, Pikachu, Monkey, Oscar the Grouch. Lately had been learning animal sounds, and he loved to “buck, buck, buck!”.  I made the chicken costume using Red Heart SuperSaver, acrylic yarn. The buttons added to each feather allows them to be removed and replaced anywhere on the sweater base. The bottom tutu can also be removed.

Once in a while, I find a few hours to myself to work on rattle orders. I am also working on a new bunny pattern.

With these cooler nights I have started working on a blanket for my bed using an entrelac pattern. I am using my largest hook, a plastic 11.50mm (p) hook.

WIP Wednesday: Ripple Baby Blanket

This pink, purple, and white baby blanket has been a work in progress (WIP) for about 3 months. When Noah was younger, it was difficult to work on toys. Blankets require less concentration than the shaping that goes into toys. Plus, I recently received my large yarn order for the year, and I want to clear some space in my crochet studio.

Monday Musings: Back to Work

As I mentioned in my previous post, I took a break from The Silver Hook in August for a family vacation in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Long car travel with a 4 month old baby (and a pair of cats) was a learning experience, but the whole trip was fantastic. We climbed a mountain, went swimming in the ocean, did a little geocaching, visited The Fortress of Louisbourg and Village Historique Acadien.  Below are pictures from Village Historique Acadien: a woman using a drop spindle to spin wool and some naturally dyed wool yarn.

If you follow my Facebook Page or my Twitter account, you might have noticed that I have been posting often an regularly. For years I’ve been using RSS feeds to follow an assortment of crafting, crocheting, finance, and news websites. With many hours being spent nursing my baby, I have had lots of time to spend on Feedly (I used to use Google Reader before it ended last month).
